Yttrium Aluminum Garnet

Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (YAG) is a materials which usually used as transparent ceramic material and has an important role as a laser source and phosphor (substance that can produce color when exposed to light radiation) because its high transparency. The laser media is one of the most important components where the movement of photons occurs inside, thus determining the quality of the laser light [4]. This media must have some properties, there are: optical properties that can focus light and transparency, chemical stability, high rigidity, low coefficient of thermal expansion, high thermal conductivity, resistance to thermal shock. The laser is needed for optical laser of cataract surgery, optical laser of characterization equipment, and other applications that need high transparent and good mechanical properties of transparent ceramic materials.

The fabrication process using solid-state method require a calcination temperature of more than 1600ÂșC which make its production cost quite high and need high energy. At this high temperature, a reaction occurs between yttrium oxide (Y2O3) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) to form an intermediate phase Y4Al2O9 (YAM), then YAlO3 (YAP), and finally YAG phase.

This research fields aimed on reducing the temperature synthesis of YAG using mechanochemical route to simplify the methods and decrease the cost and energy needed. In the meantime, this research has significant result to decrease about 30% temperature needed to produced YAG phase.
